Shoreline Beach Restoration on Triangle Lake in Howell, Michigan

In the tranquil setting of Triangle Lake in Howell Michigan, TT&C Beaches recently completed a huge 3,600-square-foot shoreline beach restoration project. This job was particularly unique, as we added massive amounts of sand to the existing beach, presenting both logistical challenges and a rewarding transformation.

Our client’s waterfront had been deteriorating due to erosion and muck buildup, leaving them in need of a significant beach restoration to restore its beauty and functionality. The project started with an initial assessment, where we mapped out the shoreline and established areas for sand distribution. Given the site’s existing landscape, we had to carefully plan out how to avoid disturbing the surroundings, ensuring minimal disruption to both the shoreline and the client’s property.

Sand, Materials, and Equipment Used

For this project, we used mason sand, known for its fine texture, excellent drainage properties, and eco-friendly composition. This type of sand is a safe and durable option that enhances both the aesthetics and usability of lakefronts, while contributing to the ecosystem’s balance. To carry out the restoration, we relied on our SandPro System, which allowed us to distribute the sand-water slurry mix precisely without driving any heavy machinery on the client’s lawn. Alongside this, dump trucks, pumps, and motorized power carts were utilized to transport and spread the sand effectively.

Due to the constraints of the landscape, we had to pump the sand into large bags, manually shovel it into power carts, and then haul the sand to where it was needed. This allowed us to work around obstacles like landscaping and tight spaces without causing damage. While the process required more manual labor than usual, our team worked efficiently, completing the project in approximately 15 hours.

The Restoration & Installation Process

We began the restoration by laying down a geo-textile fabric along the shore and the lake bottom. This fabric acts as a barrier against future weed and muck growth while providing stability to the sand layer above. Once the fabric was in place, we used the SandPro System to pump a slurry of sand and water from the shoreline directly onto the fabric. Our team meticulously spread the sand, ensuring that it was evenly distributed and compacted to create a firm, stable base for beach activities.

The client requested that the new beach seamlessly blend with their existing landscape, so we took extra care in leveling the sand and ensuring a gradual transition from lawn to lake. The result was a beautifully restored shoreline that not only enhances the visual appeal of the property but also provides a safe and enjoyable space for water activities like swimming and lounging.

Overcoming Challenges

One of the unique challenges of this job was adding the shear volume of sand to an already established beach area. This meant that precision was key. The power carts and hand-shoveling process allowed us to distribute the sand exactly where it was needed without disturbing the existing structures or landscaping. Our team’s experience and attention to detail made the process smooth, even with the added logistical complexity.

Despite the intensive labor required to move the sand manually, the restoration was completed in 15 hours. The client was thrilled with the results, noting the significant improvement in the shoreline’s appearance and functionality.
